Assuming parents and their children can agree on a nutritious and delicious lunch menu, the next challenge is how to select healthy food containers and non-toxic lunchbags.
Plastic vs. Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is plastic-free and therefore BPA-free, too. Other benefits to using stainless steel food containers is that they are non-leaching, won’t absorb odors or stains, and will keep food from getting squished! Check the packaging to make sure the stainless steel is food grade and free of lead.
Packing foods directly in plastics is not believed to be the safest choice anymore since research has shown that toxins often leach into the food. Scientists have determined that BPA (bisphenol-A) and phthalates are endocrine disrupters and have been linked, especially in children, obesity, hormone and thyroid problems, diabetes and other health problems.
