Kitchen Power!! I’m very much into this “DIY” thing lately and read where I could make my own automatic dishwasher powder, so I did! The lemon essential oil adds such a nice fresh scent to it and of course lemons are known for its cleaning ability.
This mixture was easy to make, inexpensive and great to have on hand. Works great too. Sadly, I had to tell Brody (my 4 yr old) he could not help me with this DIY!
Insert>>>>>July 2016 – My husband doesn’t think this mixture works well enough, so I need to prefect it. If you have any suggestions to make this diy automatic dishwasher mixture better, please leave me a comment. Thank you.
- 2 cups borax
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1/2 cup kosher salt
- 5-10 drops Lemon essential oil or another 100% pure essential oil made for cleaning, such as Orange
Instructions to make:
- Combine all ingredients and mix well.
- Store in sealed container.
To use, fill both cups in dishwasher. Don’t try to add less, I’ve tried and it just doesn’t work good enough. Also, you’ll need to rinse off all food and particles before placing dishing in washer.
Insert>>>>>>>PLEASE NOTE: After using this recipe for a while, I’ve noticed it works much better if both cups in dishwasher are filled up AND that all food is rinsed off dishes first.
All ingredients can be found at Walmart with the exception of the oils. Citric acid can be found in the canning aisle at Walmart. None of the above products are expensive.
Here’s an extra tip: For an added benefit, splash 1 cup of white vinegar on bottom of dishwasher for extra shine.
Note: 100% pure essential oils are very concentrated – so only 5-10 drops of the Lemon EO is all you need.
Borax – $3.38 at Walmart
Kosher salt – $1.69 at Target
Baking soda – $2.06 at Walmart
Citric acid – $2.97 at Walmart
Lemon EO – $15
Now you can enjoy nice fresh clean dishes w/out chemicals!!
