Brody’s week was amazing at BOB JONES NATURE CENTER located in Southlake, TX off Whites Chapel Road & Hwy 114. It was such a nice drive down to the nature center each morning – I’ll sure miss that. They offer summer camps for kids of all ages. It was pretty expensive, but I knew my little would love to dig in the dirt and learn about things beneath him.
Campers got down and dirty as they learned about the amazing ecosystem located just beneath their feet in the Underground Odyssey class. They explored the lives of arthropods, worms, fungi, protozoa, and a whole lot more. Did you know that one handful of soil contains more living organisms than there are people on Earth?
Here’s a few of Brody’s activities that he brought home this week. I love the “dirt dough” they did, and I’ll be sure to make a separate post on that and will put up a tutorial on how to make it. I got the recipe from them. I am not sure what that round blue thing is. It smells like flour and it was wrapped in wax paper so I didn’t know about it until we got home. Guess I’ll have to email them to ask. I’m kind of curious!!
They also learned about the complex food web and all its dramatic glory while digging in the garden, checking out the compost heap, and getting nose to ground with the forest floor.
I picked Brody up each day from camp and he fell asleep in the car on the way home every time. He was tired. Hey, the camp was only 3 hours short…but he was still very tired afterwards.
Well, on to our next activity for the summer. We got swimming lessons level 1 down, nature camp is over, and next week is VBS. Looking forward to that. We live right across from a Methodist Church, so each evening Tracy and I will walk him over there. I hope he likes it.
