My son, Brody and I made these cute whimsical DIY fall Thanksgiving turkey treat holders for his Kindergarten friends for his birthday celebration at school. Because food sensitivities are so prevalent in schools these days, we are not allowed to bring in any type of snacks, so I thought we would make something that the kids could use for Thanksgiving if they wish too.
Brody’s 6th birthday is right after Thanksgiving so I thought this fun turkey craft would be appropriate. Everyone celebrates Thanksgiving, don’t they? We only have 15 mins for his party celebration so there’s no time for the kids to make these crafts themselves. I’ll have enough time to read a book to the class, and then Brody can help me pass out the turkey holders to each classmate. These holders can hold treats of any kind or even nuts that they find outside in their yards.
Brody first made these turkey nut holders last year in his art class +Sunshine Glaze in Southlake, TX. So, they are not my creations, but we sure had fun replicating them.
DIY Fall Thanksgiving Kid’s Craft – Turkey Treat Holders
Supplies needed to make 24 Turkey Treat Holders:
- 2 cardboard egg cartons
- brown acrylic paint (1 bottle should be enough)
- yellow acrylic paint just for the beak
- 3 bags of fall feathers (Hobby Lobby) Call ahead – they may be out of them.
- mini wiggly eyes
- 2 brushes (med. sz for base, sm for beak)
Carefully tear apart the cardboard egg carton to make the holders – don’t make the tear perfect – some cardboard overage on holder is great to have. Find the best part for the beak and use scissors to cut it out. Be sure to leave enough room for the eyes and the yellow part of beak.
Before painting, form the entire beak by bending it down. Paint holders on the inside; let dry, then paint on the outside. The cups will become sturdy and stiff when paint dries.
Paint the beaks yellow top and underneath.
Glue the wiggly eyes on.
Now glue 5 different colors of feathers to the inside back of holder – spreading them out.
I place Brody’s turkey holders near the fall table centerpiece so they can be seen. They certainly blend in quite well!!
These turkey treat holders will be a splash at Thanksgiving…you’ll want to keep them around for next year’s celebration…and if they don’t make it until then…this craft is fun enough to make some more!!!
