What are “Sometimes Foods” you ask? They are types of foods you only eat “sometimes”. Pretty niffy, uh? Well, here’s how it got started.
A couple of weeks ago at dinnertime my 4-1/2 year old started a conversation about this topic. He started out by saying that pizza was “sometimes foods”. I had no idea what he was talking about. Then is said cupcakes and cake are “sometimes foods” too. By this time, I’m catching on. He finally told me that Coach Erin at preschool taught him that pizza, cupcakes and cake are “sometimes foods”, and that apples and oranges are not.
This topic and the name it was given AND the fact that my son understands it has been on my mind ever since. I even posted about it on my personal FB account, and a few preschool moms said that pizza was more than “sometimes foods” in their home. Still on my mind (more than ever), because pizza is definitely a “sometimes food” in my house, and so are cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and candies. If there’s no nutrition, it’s “sometimes food” to me.
Okay, I’m not perfect, and yes we do eat pizza, cupcakes, cakes, etc. but only sometimes. I absolutely love that Coach Erin took the time to talked about this subject to my son’s class. I bring it up to Brody all the time now and he understands. Sometimes he doesn’t like it, but that’s okay….he’ll thank me for it one day.
We were at Grandparent’s Day at school the other day and the picture above is some of what they served us. I tried to fill our plate with both types of foods….not sometimes foods and sometimes foods. Believe me, Brody now tries to tell me (in his own way) that he doesn’t want me to say anything about “sometimes foods” anymore! I’m not shunning my son from junk foods, that’s crazy – he’s going to eat it here and there and I’m not always going to be around – I just don’t allow too much junk foods in my home.
I honestly cringe when I see a young child drinking a soda. I’m a strange? No, I don’t think so. When raising my first son over 30 years ago, I wouldn’t let him have sodas at all either. Boy did I get ridiculed for that. Water has always been my drink of choice and that’s what Johnny got and that’s what Brody gets. I’m getting ready to outlaw juices too because of the high sugar content.
I’m slowly but surely turning my life into green pastures, and Brody is part of my life and so we are limited “sometimes foods” in our home. He understands that. I want to start a #sometimesfoods movement so we can teach our children that we only eat non-nutritional foods sometimes. Are you with me or not?
