Summer days are filled with fun things to do for kids…and that’s a good thing, but we don’t want their brain’s to stop learning while school it out, do we? I don’t. I believe I have a pretty good solution that will be fun AND educational! Best Buy now offers tech toys for kids that promotes STEM principles. I was chosen to review one of those tech toys. How cool is it for kids to build cool toys while engaging in educational experiences? Do you know what STEM stands for – that’s okay, neither did I. STEM is the acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math.
The above photo is of a VEX Robotics Robotic Arm tech toy that I got to build. It was fun to build and it will certainly engage your kid’s brains for hours!!

My son was one excited little boy when he opened up the outer box to find the VEX Robotics tech toy in it. I love when I can review items that he loves. First off, he is a true fan of HEXBUG, so much that his last birthday was a HEXBUG theme party. The VEX Robotics is slightly different from what he is used to building, so it ended up being a mother son collaboration.
With 350+ pieces (lots of them small) this tech toy wasn’t an overnight success, rather a week or so activity for us. We started out building it on the floor and ended up putting it on a table so we didn’t have to put it up each night. Was it a challenge? Yes it was. It was a challenge for both my son and I….but a good challenge at that. There were times I had to redo a step because I picked up the wrong pieces. Even though the instructions were spot on, I still had do-overs. My son wasn’t able to build it by himself, but he’s only 6 years old, and to be honest, he lost interest after a few days and couldn’t wait until I finished it so he could start playing.
The tech toys that are now available at Best Buy will keep your kids engaged this summer while providing hours of play as well as great experiences in learning. I believe if kids have a chance to build something from start to finish and be able to play with it later, it will mean more to them and they’ll want to spend hours and hours playing with it….and probably even take it apart to build something else. That’s what they can do with this robotic toy.

Okay, it’s said this VEX Robotics Robotic Arm tech toy is for kids, add it is…but I have to admit I totally enjoyed building it. I was enthralled with it every single night until I completed it. My favorite feature has got to be the way the arm moves up and down, and in and out. I previously wrote a blog post that also included the STEM principle, so the technology in building the robotic arm is impeccable. With me being challenged throughout the completion of it makes me want to build another one. I will say, it being recommended for 8 years and up is pretty much right. My son will have a great time playing with it now that it’s completed, but I do hope he’ll join me in the next one!!
Based on my experience helping my 6-1/2-year-old put some of the parts together, I saw “accomplishment” all over his face when he was able to put a piece together. However, I also saw some frustration, but I believe it’s his age. So, my recommendations are for kids ages 8 all the way up to grandparents!! Every piece fit perfectly together and the whole ensemble is very well made.
Make this summer fun AND engaging with awesome tech toys from Best Buy!
