I met Children’s Author Laura Eckroat this past weekend at the Funky Finds Show in Fort Worth, TX where she was a vendor selling and autographing her books. I love to read to my son, Brody and am always looking for cute stories for him.
Laura Eckroat was born and raised in Whiting, Indiana. She has lived in
Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, and now lives in Fort Worth, Texas.
She is married to Steven and has a daughter named Ashley. She also has a
one-year old Anatolian Shepherd named Muffin, who was rescued by the
Eckroat‘s when she was 12 weeks old.
Laura is certified in Special Education and is an elementary school
teacher. She teaches and volunteers at the Fort Worth Nature Center
using her books to teach children about the beauty and wonder of nature;
her workshops also teach children how to start a Science journal. She
previously was a human resources manager and the general manager of an
educational toy store. She is also a Chicago Bears football fan — and
will always be. Even though Dallas Cowboy Fans try to convert her!
Laura’s book Went Out To Get a Donut – Came Home With a Muffin was featured in Fort Worth, Texas Magazine.
It’s about a time when she went to the store to buy donuts, and bought a rescue dog and named her Muffin.
I was able to buy her new book and she gave me permission to post it here. I’m really happy about that. A very very darling rhyming book. We’ve read it over and over again and will keeping reading.
Laura’s 4th book, What’s In The Corner? … A Muffin TAIL, will be released June 4, 2013!
You can see more about Laura at her new blog here.
Below are a few questions I asked Laura. I love her answers!
1. How did you get into writing children’s books?
a natural progression for me. I’ve always enjoyed writing and wanted
to share my passions with children! My book ideas come from real life
2. When did you decide to write for a living?
school teacher and have just gotten into writing. My first book was
published in 2009. I love reading to children in schools. I get caught
up in their expressions and laughter! If I could do that full-time,
that would be a remarkable job!
3. What do you do in your spare time?
like walking through Target. Enjoy reading women’s magazines. I have a
small greenhouse in my backyard and love watching plants grow and
thrive! I enjoy taking Muffin (our dog) for walks and to PetSmart. I
worry daily about what my daughter is doing at college and hope she is
okay! I read, write, blog, Facebook, and email! And … I really do
LOVE doing laundry!!!!
4. Who is your favorite author?
love reading all kinds of books and many different genres. I like
reading young adult books because, I believe, teens are a hard audience
to please … if they think the books are good — they usually deliver!
5. What do you like most about your new book?
another SONG …. both Muffin books are “musical, mysteries”. It is so
much fun to sing them to the kids and stop and see if they can figure
out what is in that corner? or why did that boy go out to get a donut
and come home with a muffin! The interaction is so enjoyable!
6. What’s your favorite junk foods?
I don’t eat a LOT of junk food … I
used to eat a lot of DONUTS … but then switched to Muffins! (just
kidding!) I think I miss Hostess Chocolate Cup Cakes … when those
come back, I will have to purchase a box or two!
I thank Laura for her time and look forward to reviewing a few of her books. Oh, and I think I’ll have to convince her that…well…since she lives in Texas now, she has to root the Cowboys…right?
