I love watching birds nibble on bird food, but mostly I just love to watch them flutter. You could say I’m a novice birdie (bird watcher). I have a variety of bird feeders around my house that the birds just love. I get to see all types of beautiful birds by having these feeders available to them. I came across a birdseed feeder on a friend’s blog and just had to make a few of my own. They are so simple to make.
These birdseed feeders are so easy and inexpensive to make, you’ll want to make them over and over again. These ingredients I used are probably already in your kitchen….other than the birdseed. I keep
mine on the front porch in a large tin can with lid.
Ingredients and Supplies:
- 2 cups birdseed
- 1 tbl bread or cracker crumbs
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 tbls peanut butter
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tbl corn syrup or honey
- 1 tbl corn starch
- jute for hanging
- fiber for birds to make nest with (I used fiber from an old wool scarf)
- assorted shapes and sizes cookie cutters
- wax paper
- scissors, bowl, etc.
I was able to get 6 assorted size feeders from mixture.
Start out by mixing all ingredients together. Lay out a piece of wax paper on counter and sprinkle a little flour on it. Take your cookie cutters and place on paper. With your fingers slightly floured start stuffing each cutter with birdseed mixture all the way to the rim of the cutter. Let stand a few hours to dry and harden.
Once dried, gently push birdseed down and out of cutter onto wax paper. Let set for a few minutes or so before tying them up. Take a piece of fiber and jute and tie up feeder. Be really gentle when tying the knots at the top base of the feeder. Hang outside on tree limb and enjoy bird watching.
If any crumble just throw to the birds. They’ll love it any way they can get it!!
