Today I’m talking about ways to start healthy habits – something a lot of you are thinking about doing but don’t know where to start. How about in the kitchen? This post has been sponsored by Brita® and Glad®. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Anyone can start healthy habits if they put their mind to it. It doesn’t matter if you’re wealthy or on a tight budget, establishing healthy habits is doable for everyone. You absolutely do not need to be wealthy to be healthy. That’s such a farce. Take me for instance, a middle class 50+ woman raising a family on a budget. I think I’ll always be on some sort of budget. These 5 easy ways to start healthy habits in the kitchen is a great place to start.
You know what’s said about habits? If you do something long enough, it becomes a habit. Well, let’s talk about easy healthy habits in the kitchen that are affordable and very doable.
5 Easy Ways to Start Healthy Habits in the Kitchen
There are plenty of things we can do now to start healthy habits, but these 5 are the top habits that I suggest to anyone looking to get healthy.
Wash Your Hands
As simple as it is, many of us forget. Washing our hands before handling food is so important because it’s easy to spread bacteria around the kitchen and onto food. It’s important to always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before starting to prepare food.
Make Water Your Drink of Choice
Better yet, make that filtered water. Begin your day with a full glass of water filtered through a Brita® Filter Pitcher found at Dollar General. Filtering your water is a must, especially if you live in a town that has bad water to start with. By filtering tap water, you get rid of chemicals, copper, mercury, along with other contaminants you wouldn’t want to put into your body. Best of all, it’s affordable. You’ll definitely save money by not having to buy bottled water anymore. You’ll purchase the Brita® once and just fill it to the top with tap water each time. Sit it on the counter where you can see it. If you like your water cold, be sure to store the pitcher in the front of the refrigerator so it’s easily accessible.
Eat at Home More Often
I know, I know we all like to eat out, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. But if you want to get healthy, then eating at home more often is a must. This is by far the most affordable healthy habit anyone can do!
Kitchen Cleanliness & Clutter-Free
Keeping your kitchen organized, clean & clutter-free can benefit everyone. Isn’t the kitchen where the family hangs out the most? It is in my family. It just seems everything goes smoother when the kitchen is clean and the counters are clear. When the dishes get piled up in the sink and the trash are full, and there’s clutter on the counters I can guarantee we will opt for either eating out or eating junk food for dinner.
Prepare Healthy Snacks Ahead of Time
By preparing healthy snacks ahead of time, you are more likely to eat them. It’s been proven in my house. If healthy snacks are already prepared, my son and I are more likely to reach for them. I use Glad® Freezer Quart Zipper Bags to prepare fruit for our smoothies and for other snacks.
Here’s a simple Fruit Smoothie For One to enjoy for breakfast or any time of the day.
- 1/2 cup milk (any)
- 1/2 cup filtered water
- a handful of frozen fruit of your choice
- honey (optional)
Cut up fruit if needed and freeze it all in a Glad® bag. The next day, enjoy a fruit smoothie by adding all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. That’s it.
Below is a perfect drink to consume any time of day. Here’s how to make flavored water: Pour some filtered water into a pitcher and carefully drop about a cup of fruit into the pitcher of filtered water. Place pitcher in the refrigerator for a couple of hours (overnight is best) and enjoy flavored water all day long. Tip: after water is consumed, use the fruit for something else, like in hot cereal.
Follow these 5 easy ways to start healthy habits in the kitchen and you’ll be good to go. Consider drinking filtered water using a Brita® Filtered Pitcher and using Glad® bags to freeze your fruits, and you’ll be even better to go! Find the nearest Dollar General store to you here.
