Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen and Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas have teamed up for the judging of Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Kids Fit Menu Challenge.

Eight Dallas/Fort Worth high school culinary students competed in this challenge to create kid-friendly dishes incorporating fruits and vegetables. The dish that wins will be featured on Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen kid’s menu at select DFW locations.
Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Kids Fit Menu Challenge
On April 1, 2017, at Cheddar’s test kitchen in Irving, TX attendees gathered around to watch eight local high school culinary students prepare healthy dishes for a chance to have their dish featured on Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen’s kids’ menu. Four teams with two students each paired up to showcase their dish to five judges.
Next, Cheddar’s will host my family at a select DFW Cheddar’s location later in the summer to taste-test the winning dish. We look forward to having a nice family dinner at Cheddar’s and for my son to taste-testing the winning dish. Oh, there just might be more than one winner….so be sure to read this post in its entirety.
There can’t be a challenge without super cool judges! Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen’s President and CEO, Ian Baines, along with a few Cheddar’s employees, and Tara O’Donnell, Chopped Junior Winner 2016 and Sebastian Schaefer (pictured below) were the cool judges. They all did such a wonderful job and these kid judges were very professional and were evident they loved what they were doing.
From the looks of the judge’s expressions throughout the challenge, judging these dishes were tough. Each team put their own spin and variations of healthy foods into their masterpiece. The meals looked good, and I thought to myself that these were dishes that kids would truly want to try. I was able to sneak a taste or two of a few of the dishes!! They were outstanding!
About the Kid’s Fit Program
- There are 45+ schools in the DFW area in the Kid’s Fit Program. Culinary students were selected from these schools because of their continuing education in the culinary arts program after high school.
- The criteria for the students to create their dishes had to include one cup of fruit and/or vegetables.
- Each dish had to meet nutritional values, such as calories, fats, sodium, fiber, sugar and added sugars.
About Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen
Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen is built on three basic principles: simple, honest, and natural ingredients. These just happen to be favorite attributes of mine too! Founders believe when meals are prepared fresh when you order, it tastes better and makes you feel better. Cheddar’s scratch-made dishes are handcrafted to perfection in their 3,500 square foot kitchen which employees about 200 team members.
This Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Kids Fit Menu Challenge was such a great experience for these high school kids. It was a fun event to be a part of.
Be sure to stay tuned for my next post later this summer about our visit to Cheddar’s and what my 7-year-old son thought about the winning dishes. For now, find the nearest Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen casual dining location to you.
