This Year’s Resolution for me is to eat more mindful. There’s no diet in place, no pill to take, not talking about exercising here (although I need to), but just watching what I eat and asking myself if it’s good for me. Why not eat more mindfully starting now for yourself?
Eat More Mindfully Starting Now
I thank my mom every day for bringing me up to eat sensibly and mindful. My mom, bless her heart, was ALWAYS on a diet. Determined to lose those pounds she put on after having her children. She went through Weight Watchers, TOPS, KOPS and who knows what else to try to lose weight. No one in the household had that problem, just her.
I remember her and our neighbor would spend hours over coffee talking about what they ate, why they ate it, why they shouldn’t have eaten it, oh, and how bad they felt because they ate the thing!! WOW – after listening to that all your life, you kind of want to watch your weight yourself!!
I have been fortunate that I was never overweight as a kid or even in my 20’s, 30’s, 40’s. Although I ALWAYS complained about it (I mean, look what I had to hear all my life). I was never overweight, but I had that poochy tummy. That stomach I had was bloating and constipation. Now, that’s a problem.
When I was in my early 50’s, my “poochy tummy” haunted me even worse. I finally had to diet, and for someone who’s never had to go on a diet or watch what she ate, that was so hard for me to do. I could no longer eat those grilled cheese sandwiches, those Oreo Cookies that I grew to love, or those Cheetos that I enjoyed more than meat. Not only do these types of foods bloat me, but they also stopped me up big time!!
Fast forward to now at 56 years old, I’ve been on a healthy kick for at least three solid years now, but now comes menopause and a thyroid issue…so I’m started all over with that stomach. Damn, I just can’t get a break here!! You ever feel like that?
Anyway, back to Eating Mindfully. It will be much easier to carry out mindful eating when your partner is on your side. It took mine a long time, but now he has come around. We have already started to cook more at home and eat fewer desserts. Some of you might say that not eating sweets is no fun…but please know we still do, just not so much of it, and never after every meal or late at night.
