The environmental benefits of organic farming are tremendous and are probably, in fact, its most significant selling point. Some of us would prefer to be responsible shoppers by buying organic food that doesn’t involve poisoning rivers, lakes, the soil, air, and the oceans.
Moreover, by buying locally produced organic food, you are supporting local farmers, reducing carbon emissions, and creating a sense of community. It is a lot more satisfying to buy your vegetables from somebody you come to know and not from a faceless supermarket.
Advantages of Eating Organic
You have the possibility of organic being healthier. This especially applies to fresh produce. The pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers used in conventional farming are not great additions to meals. You could wash them off, although probably not all traces. With organic food, all you have to worry about is rinsing off the soil. It won’t hurt you even if you don’t wash it off, although that gritty texture is not something many people appreciate in their salads.
Organic fans will also always tell you that organic food is much tastier than conventional. It’s sometimes actually true, but not necessarily. Organic eggs sometimes taste better because the hens eat a more varied diet. Bright yellow yolks appear in free-range eggs because the hens are supplementing their rations of grain with tasty snacks of insects, slugs, seeds, and spiders.
Organic fruit and vegetables are tastier, partly because of the kinds of fruits and vegetables chosen. One of the main selling points of organic produce is indeed the taste. Varieties that are high in flavor are often selected over the long-lasting bland types favored by conventional producers.
Disadvantages of Eating Organic
There are naturally some disadvantages too. If you plan to eat organic food and nothing else, your choices are limited. While some foods are rarely grown organically, others may only be available from specialized shops. Meaning, you might have to make two trips to the grocery store if the grocery chain does not supply many organic options.
If you are planning to be extra green and only buy mainly local produce, then you will be dependent on eating fruits and vegetables in season. You’ll have to use your imagination when cooking by using what is available, and not only going with your favorites every time.
Organically grown foods also cost more. While many people consider it worth it, others prefer not to spend more on their groceries than they have to. You might not need to stick to a tight budget, but most people need that extra cash.
Foods that are not good for the environment needs a thorough washing before you eat it or feed it to pets. There is plenty of choices available and costs less. You need to decide what foods you want to buy organic and what foods you don’t. You can always go by the Dirty Dozen example.
