Did you know that the amount of food wasted around the world each year is enough to feed nearly one billion people? That’s huge and concerns me. Are you with me on this? If so, then you’ll want to know How to Easily Reduce Your Family’s Food Waste.

How to Easily Reduce Your Family’s Food Waste

If you don’t want your family to contribute to the considerable amount of wasted food each year, consider these few simple steps to easily reduce the amount of food your family wastes each day. These tips will instantly help you reduce your family’s food waste this year.

Plan Meals Ahead of Time

One of the best ways you can reduce the food your family wastes is to avoid making unnecessary purchases. With a little bit of planning, you can drastically reduce the amount of food waste in your household. Start by planning your meals each week and creating a grocery list for the meals you plan to make. Then stick to the list at the store and avoid making impulse purchases while shopping.

Use it All or Compost It to reduce your family’s food waste

When cooking, attempt to use all of whatever you cook. Leave the skin on the produce as you cook and repurpose scraps into other meals, like stocks or zest. If you do have leftover food scraps, consider starting a compost pile in your backyard to convert this wasted food into garden gold.

Get Organized in the Kitchen

Having an organized refrigerator and pantry can make it easier to avoid food spoilage over time. Start by practicing the “first in, first out” method, which means you move older products to the front of the refrigerator and pantry. Then, place the new items in the back. By being organized will make it easier to use up the older items before they expire.

Staying organized also means keeping track of the food going in and out of your kitchen. Start by taking stock of all the ingredients you have at home when planning your meals, taking note of upcoming expiration dates as you go. It’s also a good idea to take note of everything you throw out each week. This will help you determine exactly where your waste is coming from and will allow you to look into specific ways you can reduce that waste.

Improve Your Storage

Properly storing your food will make it last longer, which will decrease the likelihood that you’ll need to throw it away. Store snacks and unused pantry items in airtight containers. And make sure you’re storing your food properly in the refrigerator and freezer. There are also ways to extend the life of food by storing them in different ways. You can freeze most unused produce. Baked goods, like bread and cake, can also be frozen to extend their life.

Now, you have simple steps on how to easily reduce your family’s food waste. I wish you luck. I’m there with you…so let’s help save the environment one meal at a time.
