I had the opportunity to attend the well-known blog conference BlogHer. Though I was elated they offered me a free ticket to attend, I have to say, I was a little surprised at what some of the highlights were. Here is my perplexed thought of BlogHer17.
My Perplexed Thought of BlogHer17
When I received the email that BlogHer17 wanted to give me a free ticket to attend, I immediately started to figure out how I would get there and who I knew that was going. This was my first BlogHer conference and I didn’t want to go alone. I found a friend that I had roomed with when we attended a SoFab conference in Arkansas a few years back who also received a free ticket. We went back and forth discussing the pros and cons of going and decided why not, let’s do it.
I consider myself a pretty healthy individual and if you follow my blog, you know I write about health and wellness. I also am a bit conservative and somewhat reserved. This conference was quite the opposite. It was stated that the conference was centered around health and wellness, but for the most part, it was slightly off key to blogging as a whole. I’m disappointed that my photos didn’t turn out very well at all.
My perplexed thought of BlogHer17 isn’t to deter anyone from attending future BlogHer conferences, as a matter of fact, I’m looking forward to reading the lineup for the next one. Now before I go into some of the things I was disappointed in, I want to tell you what I was thrilled about. Besides getting to hang out with Maria and meeting other bloggers, I got to meet a lady that I have admired for quite some time. Joy Bauer of the Today Show has been an inspiration of mine since she appeared on the show. I love the episodes where she brings out the before/after of people who have lost weight. I also enjoy hearing all the nutritional information she gives. She is definitely one of the persons who inspired me to be more healthy.
Enjoyment at BlogHer17
Now before I go into some of the things I was disappointed in, I want to tell you what I was thrilled about. One of the best breakout sessions I attended was with Joy Bauer and EPIsodes. She talked about her favorite foods to eat daily and what staples to always keep in your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. I can’t wait to read more about EPIsodes and to make those delicious muffins she served us.
Carla Hall. Do you know who she is? She’s a Chef on the TV Show “The Chew”. That was an epic moment when I got my photo taken with her, but it wasn’t until later that day that she passed by me and stopped to talk with us and mentioned how she loved my earrings! Her session with Cat Cora was interesting and funny.
Probably the most interesting session with standing room only was with Chloe Spencer and Steve Spencer talking about SEO. I took away some valuable information from that session. I was able to only catch half of the Facebook session with Nathan, but that dude is on fire! He and his wife have made a successful business from their Blog – Wanna Bite.
So, if it wasn’t for the break-out sessions and the Expo, I would have thought I was attending a political conference. I could have done without hearing anything about Trump. Although I did like seeing Chelsea Clinton. I do like what she stands for when it comes to women, but her talk on Planned Parenthood with the head of the organization could have been left out. Perhaps I’m being too critical here, but I went to the blog conference to learn more about my blogging business.
I was invited to an invite-only session that tried to convince us the GMO’s were okay – I walked out on that one. I don’t want to hear that GMO’s are okay because they are not. Another speech I could have done without was about the vagina. What do these two things have to do with blogging?
My disappointment lies in the fact that some of the Keynote speeches were not about health and wellness, not about blogging, not even about women. I am not into politics and I certainly don’t want to hear any more about Trump or even the other side.
I did mention above that this was my first BlogHer Conference, and though I’m skeptical about the next one, I was told that each conference is different and no two are alike. Even though I did get a free ticket, I was still out money on the flight, hotel, food, parking, etc. So, I’ll do some well thought-out research on the next one.
One of the best moments was at the Expo when Maria and I got behind the camera to ask “Tiny” from PupStar a few questions. That part was super fun.
All-in-all I had a great time in Orlando, FL. Hanging out with Maria and getting to know bloggers whom I’ve not had the opportunity to meet was fun. There were some excellent Brands at the Expo that gave out a wealth of information about their products. The conference food was excellent, Bonnet Creek Hilton was very nice as was the conference staff.
